- Engage: (20 minutes) To begin, have students browse through a collection of websites with poems using the Poetry Resources Symbaloo page I created, as seen below.
Students will then choose their favorite poem or a poem that they would like to share and insert it into our "Read this poem" Padlet_.
- Explore: (20 minutes) Have students explore the poems their classmates have shared on our "Read this Poem" Padlet
- Explain: (5 minutes) Tell students that today (or tomorrow depending on time) they will have the opportunity to explore a certain type of poem, and then create their own and share them with the world!
- Elaborate: (40 minutes) Explain to students that their is a hashtag on Twitter that is very popular called #Poetweet. The name is based on a site that converts tweets into poems. Today students will be creating poems under a NEW hashtag that we will initiate called #kidspoetweet, with the hope of sharing each of their poems with the world and inspiring other kids to also write poetry via Twitter for National Poetry Month and beyond. Their poems for today can be completely free verse, the only catch is that they have to follow the Twitter limit of 140 characters, so word choice will be very important!
- Evaluate/Share: (5 minutes) Students will have homework that they can access by visiting our Edmodo classroom site. Their homework will be to create a poem using ReadWriteThink Student Interactives for Writing Poetry. Students have the option of choosing Acrostic, Diamante, Haiku, Letter, or Theme Poems. Or they can explore the "Word Mover" like I did to create the poem "Forget to Reach". Students need to turn in the assignment AND post an attachment of their PDF on our page for others to see!
