Reading: Main Idea
- We start off with "The Main Idea Song" by Michael Coone a song that explains what "main idea" is and how to find the main idea in a text. Perfect for fourth graders learning about main idea in literature or informational text.
2. Second, we have "Introduction to Reading Skills: Identify main idea & supporting details" by Mc-Graw Hill Education. A fun depiction of a mystery where the detective has to identify the main idea of a clue, teaching students how to do so themselves!
3. Finally, we have "BrainPOP Main Idea" by BrainPOP. A fun video where the famous characters Tim & Moby model how to determine the main of an article, facilitating the process for students.
Reading: Author's Purpose
- For author's purpose first, we have "Introduction to Reading Skills: Author's Purpose" by Mc-Graw Hill Education. A fun depiction of a game show "Intent or Eject" where the contestants have to identify the author's purpose, teaching students how to do so themselves!
2. Second, we have "Introduction to Reading Skills: Author's Purpose2" by Mc-Graw Hill Education. The second part to"Intent or Eject" where they cover entertaining and informing for the Author's Purpose, teaching children how to do it themselves.
3. Finally, we have "Author's Purpose" by heathershoresinco. A quick, short video that gives a fun acronym "PIE" to help students remember the three different purposes author's write for; persuade, inform, or entertain.
Reading: Making Inferences
- For inferences, first we have "Introduction to Reading Skills: Making Purposes" by Mc-Graw Hill Education. A fun depiction of the making of a movie where the actors continue going off the script because they're making inferences about what is occurring.
2. Second, we have "Making Inferences" by Vanessa Miller. A tutorial where students have the opportunity to learn what an inference is & then test their knowledge on examples given in the video.
3. Finally, we have "Making Inferences-Partly Cloudy" by Amy Ginder. This is a video that includes a short, silent Pixar film and then prompts the students to practice what they've learned and infer why certain things occurred in the movie.
Book Recommendations for Fourth Graders
- The first video we have for book recommendations is Top 4th Grade Reading List - Best Books by Nicky Squido. Where the creator gives the top five books that they have found fourth graders to love! This is a great video to get kids interested in books at their grade level!
2. Second, we have "Favorite Children's Books" by Bookables. A top ten list where the author (a book lover) lists her top ten books, book series and authors. This is a great list where the author does a phenomenal job listing loved & timeless books that are guaranteed to hook every child including fourth graders!
Video Creation Tools for Fourth Graders
- First, we have Animoto! A great & easy to use video creation tool. The best part? The educator account is free & includes accounts for up to 50 students, all you have to do is apply! A great tutorial on video creation to get students started, can be found below!
2. Next, we have Powtoon! Another fabulous & user-friendly presentation software. There is a free trial but to use this program yourself & 60 students it is $8/month or $96 a year. Some think the super easy format is worth it, plus it helps students keep multimedia principles in mind with it's tutorials & guides. Check out a tutorial, below!
